Established in 1919, Plaxtol WI continues to be a thriving, progressive, fun and caring village organisation offering something for everyone. New members are always welcome.
With a current membership of around 70, from those in their early 50’s through to more mature members, the activities, outings and talks offered throughout the year are planned to suit all interests and lifestyles covering travel, the arts, sport, nutrition, ecology, education and culture.
Plaxtol WI meets in the Village Memorial Hall in the evening on the first Thursday of every month at 7.45pm. The monthly meeting usually starts with time for members to relax and socialise with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee whilst seated in informal groups. This is followed by either a talk by an interesting speaker or an interactive event. The exception to this is the August Garden Meeting, when one member invites us to enjoy tea in her garden at 3pm.
A regular monthly newsletter and quarterly programme disseminates information about upcoming events to all the members by email. There are now events and clubs for members throughout the month – in addition to the regular monthly meeting – which include circular Country Walks, Tai Chi, Walking Netball at the local primary school, evening Book Club, morning Coffee & Chat in a local pub, an evening Stitch & Knit Group, cultural visits to London or locally and a quarterly local pub lunch.
As part of the West Kent Federation, Plaxtol WI likes to collaborate with other local WI’s and become involved in interesting District and National Events. The WI is proud to be the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK and celebrated its centenary in 2015. Further details can be found at www.thewi.org.uk.
